BYD’s luxury-focused Denza brand is preparing to enter the Indian market, with its first offering, the Z9 GT shooting brake, spotted testing on Indian roads for the first time. The electric performance car is scheduled to launch in India on November 13 and is expected to be priced between Rs. 1.2 crore and Rs. 1.5 crore (ex-showroom).

The Z9 GT will occupy a relatively unusual position in the Indian luxury car market, as it will be the only shooting brake currently on sale in the country. It will arrive as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) import, with the India-spec model expected to retain the equipment and specifications offered in international markets.

Denza Z9 GT: Exterior design and dimensions

The Denza Z9 GT features a distinctive shooting brake silhouette, combining the proportions of a grand tourer with the practicality of an extended roofline. At the front, it gets split Matrix LED headlamps featuring 108 lighting zones, a sculpted bonnet and discreet air intakes integrated into the bumper. A LiDAR sensor positioned on the front section of the roof is another notable design element.

The electric car measures approximately 5180 mm in length, 1990 mm in width and 1490 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3125 mm. These dimensions make it a fairly large vehicle, with a substantial road presence.

The side profile features flush-fitting door handles, a prominent character line and 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli tyres. Denza branding can also be seen on the D-pillars. While camera-based outside rearview mirrors are available in certain international markets, their availability on the Indian version is yet to be confirmed.

At the rear, the Z9 GT gets slim LED tail-lamps, a sharply raked rear windscreen and a dual-ridge roof spoiler with an integrated stop lamp. The bumper features a layered design, while the e3 badge on the tailgate identifies the platform and electric motor configuration.

One of the more interesting technologies is the rear-wheel steering system, which allows the rear wheels to turn by up to 15 degrees. This enables the Z9 GT to perform tight turning manoeuvres and crab-walk functionality, allowing it to move diagonally in certain situations.

Denza Z9 GT: Battery, performance and range

The Denza Z9 GT is expected to feature a 122.5kWh battery pack powering three electric motors. The setup comprises one motor at the front and two at the rear, producing a combined output of 1156 HP and 1200 Nm of torque.

Power is delivered to all four wheels, allowing the electric shooting brake to accelerate from 0-100 km/hr in a claimed 2.7 seconds. Its claimed top speed stands at 240 km/hr.

According to international specifications, the Z9 GT offers a WLTP-certified driving range of up to 600 km. The model also supports ultra-fast DC charging at up to 1500kW, with a claimed 10-97 percent charging time of approximately nine minutes under compatible conditions. It additionally supports AC charging at up to 11kW.

These charging figures are based on the vehicle’s international specifications, and actual charging performance in India will depend on the availability of compatible charging infrastructure.

Denza Z9 GT: Expected price and rivals in India

The Denza Z9 GT is expected to be priced between Rs. 1.2 crores and Rs. 1.5 crores (ex-showroom). Since it will be imported as a CBU, pricing will be an important factor in determining its competitiveness in the Indian luxury EV market.

The car will not have a direct body-style rival in India, as there are currently no other shooting brakes on sale in the country. The BMW i5 M60 could be considered one of its closest alternatives in terms of its positioning as a premium electric performance car.

With its unusual body style, three-motor powertrain and advanced rear-wheel steering technology, the Z9 GT will be a distinctive addition to India’s luxury electric vehicle market. Its launch on November 13 will reveal the final pricing, specifications and equipment offered to Indian buyers.
